Surely we should learn from the problem in the Gulf that oil prodction needs to be limited and controlled even more. Our dependency on this stuff just sickens me, and now is the time to get off the petroleum nipple and move forward.

well, this has been a tough one. I mean, blogging is fun, and free. You can say whatever you want, and deal with the consequences. It's the ultimate freedom of the press, in some ways.

But, how many blogs are acceptable? I mean, in this age of cutting back, and being responsible, surely multiple blogs is just a bit silly, right? I mean, who do I think I am to be spouting nonsense on two, or three blogs anyway? I'm just some goon who likes making weird and wonderful surfboards, what do I know?

So, in the interest of streamlining, and keeping the content fresh, I've decided to disontinue this particular blog and focus on the Royal blog. It makes sense anyway since my biggest rants are about boards any way...or at least it does at the moment...bah....

Thanks to everyone who checks in, and has encouraged me over the years(yeah i said it YEARS! I can't believe that).

Please tune in to the Royal blog for more of the same junk that I've been posting here, without all the linky stuff...

F-ing surf industry....what a joke. I mean, since when did we start surfing to be industrious anyway?! I can hear the rants of Dora now...

Look hear, if you are trying to break into the surf industrial complex, be warned. You are going to probably work for a huge conglomerate, that may or most likely not have any ethical sense. Not to mention working a 'job' no different than any other professional. We all have our commitments, and responsibilities and therefore need to work in some way to fulfill them. Just don't think going to work for Brand Xtreme is going to be the cool job you expect it to be.

It is an incestuous, back stabbing, and greedy industry driven by ego and profit. No different than the banking sector that could be blamed for the mess we're all in now.

This is a genralisation of course, and there are still a few small innovative companies around, but as the recession deepens they may not last much longer. They don't get the coverage deserved because the bigger guys buy up all the advertising, and then claim these ideas as their own.

It is all a joke. Why would you want to be a part of that? Do you want someone to tell you how, where, and when to surf? Soul? Give me a break. That has long been sold to the Devil for chump change, bro....

It's no secret that I love making surfboards. It is also no secret that my boards aren't cheap, and that it is how I attempt to support myself, and family. And, everyone knows that cheaply produced boards are flooding the market and making this difficult for some. Some boards are garbage, some are actually well made. Hard to tell if you're learning, or new to the surfing craze.

What bothers me most about all this is what happens to all the used, second hand boards that people have moved on from, or are damaged and just left to rot. There are no environmentally friendly boards made cheaply, especially when mass produced. So, all these toxic, used boards end up where?

When I learned to surf, you bought second hand. Why would you buy a new board, when you're only going to smash it up? After getting a homemade board from a neighbor - who was going to throw it out - I worked around the house, earned my allowance and bought my 1st real board used from a real surfshop. I loved it, and when I was ready, I moved on to another board, also used. I never had much money as a kid, due to the surfing lifestyle and my loathsome attitude towards work. So all my boards were usedm got damaged, repaired and ridden over and over before being given/sold to another beginner to use. Who then progressed and traded it in for a newer board down the road.

The second hand market is busting at the seams with gems at the moment, and they're loads cheaper than if bought new. It is a great way to try out new shapes before spending loads of money on that shiny new custom shape. Plus, they don't depreciate any more.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, in this age of being green, and everyone trying to save the planet, why are we mass producing toxic equipment destined/designed to fall apart and pollute the ocean, or landfills?

in the words of a poster on MSW, if you're after a cheap board:

Buy second hand and repair and reuse, because you can't recycle....

Was trying out a new - to me - foam the other day, and glued it up using a perimeter glue line stringer. I shaped it, didn't like the outcome, and was trying to snap it to put in the recycling bin....

Been making a lot of fish lately, and am stoked on it, really. But, what ever happened to the egg? I mean, really? Seems to me that before Sprout, and the fish revolution, that I admittedly got caught up in, eggs were the go to board when it was less than perfect. It makes sense, nice curvy outline - much like my favourite women. And, forgiving in less than perfect condtions, again like...hmmm...ha,...yeah!

Biofoam number one

This was my 1st biofoam blank. I've had it lying in the corner for 6 months waiting for me to decide what to make out of it. Yesterday, I couldn't wait any longer and dove in.

I had heard all the moans about the way it tore, and didn't finish well. But, this was a pleasure to shape. It didn't tear, and sanded really easily. Am really happy with it.

Bummer about the yellow color, but it will be getting tinted anyway...

fish went so well on this long RH point style reef...fairly steep take off with large wide walls...had a lot of comments along the lines of "what are you riding??!! you are getting and making way more waves than you should on a fish!"...and a few saying "surprised you can make the drop on that!"..it got up to solid 5ft like 3 or 4 ft over head and it was still loving it...drops got a bit later but wooohaa was really handling the speed...dunno wether it might be just me getting more dialled into the board also...was managing ful drawn out round house cut backs for the first time on that board...plenty of barrell time too..was loving it!! hahah

A couple weeks ago I had the exquisite pleasure of meeting up with the kind folks at Fluid Concept in Scarborough, UK. They make really lovely boards, and specifically high performance, hand made, parabolic eps/epoxy speed demons. I was really blown away by the attention to detail, and stoke they have for making boards.

Super humble, these guys have so much talent, and the intelligence in design to calculate the U value for each board to show its exact carbon footprint. Gnarly...

But, on top of all that, they are still amped to surf - and some heavy/sketch waves at that! - and enjoy all aspects of the waterman lifestyle.

There is also a movie being made from the area - where the image above comes from - called 900 miles. From what I've seen it looks like a solid film , and I'm looking forward to the release.

Just found these pictures of the revised set up.

Tynemouth is a quirky place. Kinda reminds me of OB San Diego. There's lots of eccentric folk about, they're generally friendly, and curious as to what a surfboard maker is doing in the bleak north of England. Its a funny little village on the coast of a major city, yet feels a world away. Things don't change fast, and everyone knows each other.

Today this lovely english(duh) gentleman poked his head in and offered me some tea, and an ancient sea chest. There's a mechanics next door, and their clients are often peeking in the door to see what all the fuss is, and why there's surfboards all over the alley.

The best thing is probably Copperfields pub is less than 50 yards away, and besides being able to get a freshly pulled Bass, the food is great...

It's not secret that I love the fish platform, and looking at history for inspiration. So, I love comparing new to old, and seeing where other people more advanced than me get there ideas/inspiration from.

Here's a very small picture of a Mirandon Twin Pin from Ryan Fields Photography site. Which is well worth a visit if you haven't had a look. You can clearly see the vee panels with a reverse or inverted vee in between the fins.

Here's a shot of Dick Van Straalen's hull. How cool is that? I'd love to spend some time with him and talk shop. His shapes are quite inspiring.

Then there's Mick Mackie. Another person I'd love to meet and talk with. He innovates, and experiments with some cool stuff. This picture is from his site, and shows some of his own personal evolution.

It has been ages, but recently regained contact with another mentor of mine from Brazil, Mauro Roxo. Maurao is one of those guys that can do it all. Shape anything, glass, sand, polish to perfection, spray, he's the whole package. Yet, super humble and full of aloha. He took me under his watchful eye, and constantly taught me little tricks, and laughed at my funny little boards - in a good way. His shop also does waveskis, kiteboards, and hosts international shapers from time to time.

I am forever in his debt, and want to say thanks for sharing information, and aloha so selflessly.

To witness the craziness that was Bob Simmons would've be a fun thing to do. This picture, supplied by a fellow on Swaylocks, just blew my mind. We all know about concaves, and belly, and rocker and everything, but just look at that! Can you imagine seeing that in the 40s?! And to think he was doing wood skinned foam core sandwiches back then too...

Where would all our Fishy good times be without him....?

On a more humble note, and being inspired somewhat by the image above, I've decided to take the 1st of hopefully many steps into some new materials/disciplines, and try my 1st semi-compsand. I have another one rough shaped that will be wood skinned, but this one will just be glassed over the foam. Looking forward to the process...

Its not done yet anyway and still needs to be rubbed out and polished, but am looking forward to getting it in the water...
